Tottenham secures Mateus Fernandes for nearly €100 million

Mateus Fernandes is on the verge of joining Tottenham in a transfer poised to go down in the history of Portuguese football. According to The Athletic, Spurs beat out competition from several clubs including Manchester United by submitting the highest bid to West Ham.

The deal is expected to be worth around €98 million, a figure that meets West Ham’s demands and reportedly convinced the Portuguese international to head to North London.

If finalized, Mateus Fernandes will become the third most expensive Portuguese player of all time, trailing only João Félix (€127 million to Atlético Madrid) and Cristiano Ronaldo (€117 million to Juventus). It would also mark the biggest signing in the London club’s history.

Manchester United had also been tracking the player but reportedly backed off due to West Ham’s asking price and the wage costs involved, turning their attention instead to other transfer targets.
